cover 1724 (Oct.) entire letter (a little truncated at foot) from Freshwater Bay via London to Highworth, Wiltshire, rated "In all 7" and with Bishop mark on reverse; the contents include "We are now about 50 mile from any Place & were fore't to lie on ye cold ground for almost a Fortnight till we could build houses to succour us. I never underwent more hardship in all my life as I have since here ....". A remarkable early settler's letter and one of the earliest items of mail from Newfoundland sent through the posts. Photo
