Title, first device, woodcut headpieces and large decorative initials opening each book PRINTED IN RED; from Acts of the Apostles onwards the woodcut headpieces and initials printed in black. (Small hole in a1-2 and short tear in final leaf expertly repaired, lower margin of a2 slightly extended.) 19th-century deep maroon roan over thick pasteboard, the panelled sides gold-tooled with Aldine dolphin device at centre, spine elaborately gilt, tan gilt lettering-piece in second compartment, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (very slight rubbing at extremities, one corner slightly bumped). EDITIO PRINCEPS OF THE COMPLETE BIBLE IN GREEK, EDITIO PRINCEPS OF THE SEPTUAGINT, AND SECOND EDITION OF THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT. The Greek New Testament had first appeared edited by Erasmus in 1516; both the N.T. and the Aldine Greek Bible were printed after but published before the Complutensian Polyglot, which was not issued until after March 1520. The Old Testament was edited by Aldus's father-in-law and successor as director of his famous printing shop, Andreas Asulanus, who boasts in the dedication to have collated numerous and very ancient codices. In the New Testament he deviates from Erasmus's readings in less than two dozen places. Although Aldus Manutius had died in 1515 and Marcus Musurus in 1517, it is almost certain that this edition of the Greek Bible had already been planned by them; Musurus mentioned it in 1515 to Jean Grolier as one of the tasks that remained to be done.
