A plaster of the present model, along with its female counterpart, was exhibited in the Salon of 1875 and a bronze in the next year's exhibition. The model was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1878 and with the firm Christofle and Cie.
Guillemin is known for his exotic depictions of Arab and romantic figures. The present bronze with its extraordinary patination and high quality casting was a product of a collaboration between this very accomplished sculptor and the highly skilled firm of Christofle and Cie. This firm known primarily for their silverwork for a time produced decorations and "objets d'art" in conjunction with the most celebrated sculptors in colored silverwork, gold plate, and inlays often in imitation of Oriental lacquers and damascene.
