Lot Essay
The plaster model of Cheval Surpris was exhibited at the Salon in 1833, with a bronze version commissioned by the duc de Luynes shown the following year. In Barye's catalogues, the model first appears in 1847. Other examples may be found in the Louvre (OA 5771, La Griffe et la dent, fig. 58, p. 102) and in The Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore.
