The still life artist Eelkema worked and died in his native town Leeuwarden. He became deaf at the age of seven and was taught in Groningen. He travelled to France several times, also visiting Italy, Switzerland and England. In 1836 he moved to Amsterdam, leaving in 1837 when he became blind
