Lot Essay

Van der Griendt was born in Rotterdam and studied in Antwerp before settling in Delft in 1828, where he painted mostly landscapes.
These two views of the same room in his house, where he lived with his family from 1823 to 1855, provide a fascinating record of how van der Griendt's collection and interests evolved. In the two years that passed between the two drawings, the bones and other collectables that filled the room have partly been replaced with sculptures, pictures and other works of art
