Lot Essay

(1) Kaemmerer worked in The Hague until 1865, when he settled in Paris to remain there for the rest of his life. Here he met the art dealer Van Gogh, then working for Goupil, and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1870. Kaemmerer's work in the style of Tissot, sometimes with figures in 18th Century costume, was much in demand at the time, and only recently fetched very high prices again. The present drawing would seem to date from before 1865
