The church tower depicted has been identified as that of the village of Zanddijk near Veere, which had been steadily enroached upon by the sea. The tower had been demolished for the re-use of its stones by the French in 1812-3, and appears in another drawing by the artist (Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, exhibition catalogue, Middelburg, 1963, no. 18, illustrated)
