De Gruyter (loc.cit.) dates this drawing to Weissenbruch's early career and notes that the must have been much influenced by Andreas Schelfhout in his early years. While the landscape in the present drawing has traditionally been identified as near Oosterbeek, it is possible that it is in fact a view from a rise overlooking the Spaarne towards Haarlem, the with the church of Saint Bavo beyond
