Lot Essay

In 1782, William Turnbull married Eleanor Stevenson, the daughter of Michael Stevenson of Ketton Hall, Co Durham, who bred the famous Durham or Ketton Ox, progenitor of the modern shorthorn breed. William Turnbull also bred fine cattle and founded the first Farmer's Club, at Hawick in 1776. This portrait was commissioned by the club in 1821 'in testimony of their respect and as the sole surviving original member' for which they paid 26-2-6 to the artist.
