Lot Essay

The design originates from Piranesi's illustration in his Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi, Sarcofagi 1778. See Christopher Gilbert Country House Lighting 1660-1890, Temple Newsam Country House Studies, no. 121. John Bright succeeded to Argand & Co.'s establishment at 37 Bruton Street in the mid 1820s and is listed there in the 1830s.
