"What one has to ask oneself is why these apparently arbitrary combinations of things seem natural and right, and why the conjunctions resonate in the mind. One answer is that these are especially sensitive samplings of the textures of modern Latin American life, where the artificial is so often in conflict with the natural; where what is wantonly wasted is also, by a paradox, what is devotedly saved. More than other civilisations, that of Latin America is built up of visible layers: the Pre-Colombian, the Colonial, the Post-Colonial and the Modern. Rodriguez's boxes are direct reflections of the great conflicts which exist in Latin American history.
I have called her boxes territories; in a related sense, they are also journeys. When we start to examine them we become characters in the story, participants in a voyage whose conclusion remains unknown. Because these are works of art, not books, with all the ambiguity visual expression implies, the route may in fact vary every time we look. The final object enclosed in the box is the spectator, who changes all the rest."
