A PAIR OF HELLENISTIC GOLD DOUBLE LION-HEADED EARRINGS
CIRCA 320-300 B.C.
The spirally twisted gold wire tapering hoop terminating in two filigree tongued collars, a hollow naturalistically modelled lion's head emerging from each, the larger head with additional filigree ivy leaf collar, repaired, 1.1/8 in. (2.8 cm.) high av.; another similar lion-headed earring with smaller terminal in the form of a ram's head; another lion-headed earring with luxuriant mane; a bull's headed hoop earring; a large and small hoop earring each terminating in a filigree rosette with spiralling volute, all late 4th-2nd Century B.C.; and another earring with a dolphin head, the hoop with one green glass, two aubergine glass beads and four gold spool-shaped beads, 1st Century B.C., 1.1/8 in. (2.8 cm.) high max. (8)
