A handwritten accompanying label reads: "Sale Sotheby 13/6/44, lot 144 ... formerly the property of the late Col. Sir E. Hildred Carlisle, Bt. C.B.C. The lots 128-147 were found by the staff of Mr James Stevenson on the edge of the crater of the volcano on the Island of Volcano, one of the Lipari Islands which he bought about 1840."
