Lot Essay

This bottle is a masterpiece of Suzhou workmanship, making full use of each dark inclusion to the best effect.

For a similar, but smaller example from the Gerry P. Mack Collection, see Sotheby's, New York, 25 October 1997, lot 118.

For a slightly more rounded shadow agate bottle depicting a boy leading an ox to one side, see Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle, The J & J Collection, Hong Kong, 1993, vol. I, p. 242, no. 149. For another example depicting a boy leading a deer towards rockwork near pine, see Robert W. L. Kleiner, Chinese Snuff Bottles from the Collection of Mary and George Bloch, Hong Kong, 1987, Catalogue, p. 105, no. 147. In shape the bottle is perhaps closest to another illustrated by the same author, ibid, p. 108, no. 151.

For another Suzhou agate bottle depicting a seated figure reading, see Sotheby's, London, The Stone Picking Studio Collection, (Cai Shi Xuan), 21 June 1995, lot 79. For a bottle depicting a fisherman and a young boy in a pine landscape, see Sotheby's, Hong Kong, 3 May 1995, lot 463
