First issued at Bologna in 1613, and cited in Walton's Complete Angler, chapters 5, 6, 12 and 13. Aldrovandus or Aldrovandi (1522-1605) was an Italian of noble birth and strong scientific disposition. When in Rome in 1545, countering a charge of heresy, he met Guillaume Rondelet and accompanied the French physician to the fish markets in order to study the various species. In 1553 he obtained a medical degree at Bologna University, and was soon after appointed professor of the history of "simples" which he extended to include animals and minerals as well as plants. His studies in natural history were prodigious. Most of his works, including the De piscibus, were published after his death, and are characterised by superlative woodcuts. Brunet I, 155; DSB pp. 108-110; Nissen Schne Fischbcher 7; Nissen ZBI 70; W. & S. p. 3; Petit 32.
