The present copy has the variant of the title page with the author's initials only (the other issue mentions the author's name in full). Divided into five parts, the last of which is on fishing, this work is a practical manual on fowling and fishing generally, and is noted for its admirable illustrations. It contains the first description of a fishing-rod in a French sporting book, and also gives the first illustration of an eye hook and triangular landing net, inventions which the author claims as his own. Carp and pike are the fish that chiefly interest him, and his contribution to angling literature is described by Hills as being "of high originality". His work was the forerunner of many bearing the same or similar titles by Liger, Blome and other compilers. Fortin, a monk of Grandmont, identifies himself on the title only by his initials and the sobriquet "le Solitaire Inventif".
