Les Franais peints par eux-memes, encyclopedie morale du dix-neuvime sicle. [Vol. IX: Le prisme, encylopdie morale du dix-neuvime sicle], Paris: L. Curmer, 1840-1842. 9 volumes, large 8 (265 x 175mm.), 8 frontispieces, portrait of Napoleon, 404 hand-coloured engraved plates after Gavarni, Pauquet, Monnier, Gagniet, Lami, Penguilly and others, wood-engraved illustrations, with two additional suites of full-page illustrations, one in black only, the other hand-coloured and heightened with gum arabic, roan-backed boards, gilt lettered, back of the binding inscribed A.A. for Adolphe Audenet (some spines chipped).
Les Franais peints par eux-mmes came out in 422 part-issues, appearing several times a week, and reaching completion in eight volumes. As well as the plates, it includes "about 1500 smaller wood engravings," and in Ray's words "constitutes a comprehesive survey of French society, the first five volumes dealing with Paris and the last three with the provinces." Ray notes that volume IX contains no plates but consists entirely of vignettes in the text. Though an integral part of the set it is "often missing" since it was published as a gift to subscribers. Colas 1101; Lipperheide Fc37-Fe10; Ray The Art of the French Illustrated Book 227; Petit 1007, noting that volume II contains a piece entitled "Le pcheur des bords de la Seine" with two vignettes.
