HERESBACH, Conrad. Rei rusticae libri quatuor ... De venatione, aucupio atque pisatione compendium, Cologne: Johannes Birckmann, 1573. 8 (153 x 90mm.) (slightly browned), 19th-century calf (extremities worn, joints weak).

First printed by Birckmann at Cologne in 1570. Walton's Compleat Angler bears a strong resemblance to the De venatione of Heresbach which consists of a dialogue between the practitioners of various field sports. The greatest share in the debate is taken by "Halicus" who examines the different modes of fishing and various kinds of fish. BL German Books 1455-1600 p. 397; Petit 1186 -- and 2 others, a later Latin edition of Heresbach (Speier, 1595) and a 1544 edition of Martial's epigrams. (3)
