FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, translated by Laurent Joubert from the Latin version: "[La] traduction est plus recherche que l'original latin," in Brunet's opinion. The portrait of the author in a renaissance cartouche after a drawing by Pierre Vase and the very fine woodcut illustrations of fishes, shellfish and other animals (after G. Reverdi according to Baudrier) are entirely taken from the 1554 Latin version. Their boldness and accuracy is such that most of the species can be identified, though a similarity exists to the cuts used by Belon, whom Rondelet met in Rome in 1550. Cited by Walton in the Compleat Angler, chapters 1, 11, 13 and 14. Nissen ZB1 348; Brunet IV, 1373; Baudrier X, 239-41; Petit 1837.
