SALVIANI, Ippolito. Aquatilium animalium historiae liber primus cum eorundem formis aere excusis, Rome: Ippolito Salviani, 1554 [but 1557 on the colophon]. 2 (410 x 270mm.), engraved title with medallion portrait of the author within an architectural frame, 98 numbered engravings (misnumbered 99) on 81 full-page copperplates, large historiated initials and type ornaments, Salviani's Hercule device on II8v, text endings in decorative forms (title soiled, occasional spotting and some waterstains throughout, tear restored on B8, M1 rehinged), later half calf (worn, spine detached).
FIRST EDITION, (?) FIRST ISSUE, dated October 1557 on the colophon, though 1554 on the title page. In common with one of the two Harvard copies, the date "M.D.LIIII" on the title has been changed after printing by erasing part of the first two I's and joining them with ink to form a V. The death in 1555 of Salviani's patron, Marcello Cervini, whose coat-of-arms is at the head of the title, could have delayed the appearance of this, the most costly book to come from Salviani's press. According to Brunet, the plates were engraved by Antoine Lafrry, but Nissen attributes them to Bernard Aretinus. The fish and marine animals are labelled on the copperplate with names designated as G[reek], L[atin], and V[ulgar]. Pages 112, 130, 137v, 194 and 206V have a cancel slip, set in type and pasted over the engraved label. Mortimer/Harvard French Sixteenth Century Books 454; Brunet V, 101; Nissen Schne Fischbcher 112; Nissen ZBI 3555; Petit 1881.
