BROWNE, Moses. Angling Sports in nine piscatory eclogues: A new attempt to introduce a more pleasing variety and mixture of subjects and characters into pastoral, London: Edward and Charles Dilly, 1773. 8, half title, engraved frontispiece (frontispiece and title lightly browned), contemporary polished calf, gilt panelled spine (joints cracked, corners worn), green speckled edges. Provenance: PRESENTATION COPY, front free endpaper inscribed: "To Mrs. Long, a small acknowledgment, & humble testimony, of her many undeserved favours ... December 1773," and signed "The Author". Third edition. Moses Browne (1704-87) was a main poetical contributor to the Gentleman's Magazine, editor of The Compleat Angler, a pen-cutter, and subsequently vicar of Olney. His "Piscatory Dialogues" were first published in 1729. W. & S. p. 43; Petit 286.

FIRST AND ONLY SEPARATE EDITION, although reprinted in Ruddiman's Colletion of scarce, curious and valuable pieces, both in prose and verse (Edinburgh, 1773 and 1785), and plagiarised by Thomas Lathy in his poem The Angler (1819). W. & S. p. 6: "the original edition has become rare"; Petit 594.
Together with the 1785 edition of Ruddiman's Collection of Scarce, Curious and Valuable Pieces, Phineas Fletcher's Piscatory Eclogues (Edinburgh, 1771) and 4 other volumes of verse by Gay and Thomson. (8)
