EXTREMELY RARE. First published as The Angler's Delight in 1676, Gilbert's work then appeared under the title The Young Angler's Companion in 1682. Westwood's bibliographical note describes this as "the 3rd edition of Gilbert's tract, the 2nd having appeared in 1682. A copy in Mr. Heseltine's collection contains the following M.S. note: 'This original Piece of Fishing was first printed in 1676 and one among the few remains of copies coming to the hands of one Fox, a bookseller in Holbourne, he reprinted it in 1776.' Fox's copy, however, must have been of the 2nd edition, as the 1st has the title of 'The Angler's Delight' & does not contain the paragraph 'To fox fish'. -- In Pickering's sale catalogue the date of 1774 is assigned to the present edit[ion]." In Westwood's bibliography, there are said to be two issues by Fox, the first without imprint, the second dated 1776. NEITHER ISSUE IS RECORDED IN ESTC. W. & S. p. 106; Petit 1071: "Trs rare".
