SAUNDERS, James. The Compleat Fisherman: Being a large and particular account of all the several ways of fishing now practised in Europe ... more particularly calculated for the sport of angling ... collected from the best authors and the long experience of James Saunders, Esq., of Newton-Awbery upon the River Trent, London: for W. Mears and S. Tooke, 1724. 12, folding engraved plate (the plate slightly worn along folds and bound in before B1 rather than as frontispiece, earlier leaves dampstained at margins, final leaf browned at margins), contemporary panelled sheep (extremities rubbed, split marks on upper cover). Provenance: Francis Francis (1822-86).
FIRST EDITION, first of three issues in 1724. The work was also reprinted by Smeeton as The Fisherman, or, The art of angling made easy ... by Guiniad Charfy. Westood & Satchell note that Saunders is the first angling author who mentions silk-worm gut (pp. 91-92), although Pepys wrote of it in his diary for March 18th, 1667. W. & S. p. 189; Petit 1890: "ex. de la vente Francis-Francis".
