DE CASTELLANE
EPERNAY
The noble Vicomte de Castellane founded this house in 1895. De Castellane sell just over three million bottles every year. Since Laurent-Perrier took over in 1985 the vinification and the wines have been modernised, leading to greater purity but less personality in the champagnes. Today's president Mr Augustine is one of the warmest and most generous men running a champagne house. When I was last there it was an improvised visit and he took me down to the secret treasure chamber and let the corks fly like a man possessed. I think we tasted twelve vintages down to 1915, the oldest wine left. The majority of the wines tasted were magnums. And not only that, we actually tasted two magnums of each sort to see if the newly disgorged or the normal disgorged bottles were preferable. Champagne experts really like that! What struck me at this tasting was how the wines held structurally and aromatically. Less good was the mousse. That explains why I have never been particularly impressed by Castellane's wines at restaurants or from private cellars. Always check whether an aged bottle comes directly from the house or not. Mr. Augustine had never before tasted a '55 before I visited him. We both quickly agreed that it is the best wine that was produced on the estate.
