PHILIPPONAT
MAREUIL-SUR-AY
The house was founded in 1910 by Pierre Philipponnat, and in 1935 he bought the jewel in the company crown, the 5.5 hectare vineyard Clos des Goisses. In 1987 Philipponnat became part of the Brizard group. They buy in 75 of the grapes from some highly ranked vineyards (97 on average), with the rest coming from Mareuil-sur-A. Until quite recently the firm was run purposefully by the sporting and golf-mad Paul Couvreur. He managed the excellent grapes in a praiseworthy manner, and the wines share his charm and personality. All of them are intensely fruity with a characteristically youthful tone of gooseberry in the nose. Philipponnat is now sold to Bruno Paillard. Let me say once and for all that Clos des Goisses belongs amongst the inaugural wines. I recently held a practically complete vertical tasting of this unique wine and the wines were indeed among the best we ever tasted.
