Johann Heinrich Roos was the most succesful painter of animals in Germany in the second half of the 17th Century. He was courtpainter to Landgraf Karl Ludwig of Hessen from 1664. The present picture is the second earliest known painting by the artist; the earliest being dated 1655. The composition shows the influence of his master Karel Dujardin, with whom he was apprenticed in 1647.
