The composition follows the engraving of circa 1587 (B.21.II).
The flame of the candle is set in a depression in the support which the copyist has gilded, giving the impression that a fictive candle has burnt a hollow in the support.
Drs J. Dik, Phd at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Amsterdam, has technically analysed the pigments in the present painting: some were no longer used after 1725, this date may thus provide a terminus ante quem for the date of execution of the present lot.
His report, dated 26 February 1999, is available to the buyer.
