After his move to The Hague from Middelburg, Van der Venne specialised in monochrome paintings, which were called grauwtjes. These quickly executed works were finished paintings that looked like drawings. The term grauwtje also applied to the content: Van der Venne mostly chose the elderly or poor as his subject matter.
