Andries Both was one of the first Dutch followers of Pieter van Laer, called Il Bamboccio. In 1634, the year in which the present picture was painted, he set out for Italy, where he was to die. In Italy, he would specialize in figure compositions set in landscapes or in town squares. The present picture was probably painted in his hometown Utrecht before he left for Italy. In the use of candlelight he shows an indebtness to the Utrecht Caravaggists.
