The sitter, son of Nicolaes van Assendelft and A. van Ouwendyck, was secretary of the Court of Delft. He married Maria van Sassen, daughter of Gerard van Sassen and Maria van Thol, on 15 July 1629 in Delft.

The inscriptions of the ages of the sitters suggest that the female portrait was executed first, circa 1675, and that the pendant was painted some four years later, circa 1679.
