Lot Essay

The present lot is one of a group of six paintings of historical and allegorical subjects which were executed after 1660 (see Sumowski, op. cit., nos.1002/7). Of these, the most notably are the Allegory of Peace in the collection of Baron Steengracht at Castle Moyland near Cleve (Sumowski, op. cit., no.1004) and the Isaac and Rebecca, sold in these rooms, 4 May 1999, lot 114 (Sumowski, op. cit., no.1006).
The figure in the present lot shows an indebtness to Titian; the composition seems to be an adaptation of Titian's painting of 1515 in the Louvre (H.E. Wethey, The Paintings of Titian, II, 1975, p.162, no.22, fig. 31), which Koninck might have known from a copy.
