A marten with a dead dove and butterflies by the foot of a tree in a landscape

Only a few paintings by the artist, who is better known for his watercolours, are recorded. Like his father Matthias he painted forest floor still lives. The present lot is to be compared with the picture, signed and dated 1679, showing a similar composition with a tree on the right, sold at Sotheby's London, 6 July 1983, lot 98, ill.(E. Gemar-Koeltzsch, Hollndische Stillebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert, III, 1995, p.1140, no.448/2, ill.).
