Lot Essay

The composition is based on the engraving by Martin Schongauer (B.9[124]).
The male coat-of-arms has been kindly identified by E. Wolleswinkel of the Iconografisch Bureau, The Hague. A member of the same family was portrayed by an unknown South Netherlandish artist, see the picture in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne.
