Lot Essay
The iconography of these two images derives from Jacobus de Voragine's Golden Legend of circa 1275, which describes the extended family of Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin. The first panel depicts the Virgin and Child and Saint Anne, beneath a wall overlooked by Joseph, and Saint Anne's three husbands, Joachim, Clopas and Salome. The second shows the other two of Saint Anne's children: Mary, her daughter by Clopas, with her children, Saints James the Less, Joseph the Just, Simon Zelotes and Jude, and Mary, her daughter by Salome, with her children, Saints James the Great and John the Evangelist. The latter two Marys are overlooked by their respective husbands, Alpheus and Zebedee.
