Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159-89), the greatest of all Japanese heroes, was known in his youth as Shanao or Ushiwakamaru. Following Yoshitsune's success in defeating the gigantic monk Musashibo Benkei in swordsmanship, Benkei became his loyal servant and is here humorously depicted submitting to an indignity inflicted by his young master
