Lot Essay

Although this construction of 'simianping' (four sides flush) is a characteristic form of Ming furniture, the present lot is rare and there appear to be no directly comparable examples published.

For a huanghuali daybed of closely related form, but larger proportions, from a private collection in Brussels, see Grace Wu Bruce, Chinese Classical Furniture, Hong Kong, 1995, fig. 22. In addition to having more slender proportions than the latter, the present example appears to have more tapering legs and higher hoof feet.
