A Huanghuali and Wumu Chair, Meiguiyi
Late 17th Century
The huanghuali back seat frame enclosing an ebony spindle-back framework with two interlocking double circle braces, the sides with conforming design, above the original soft mat seat, the legs of circular section joined by the pierced ebony apron with oval boxwood braces above, and the lower stretchers and footrest below

Lot Essay

The combination of woods in a chair of this form in unusual. However, it relates to a pair of huanghuali meiguiyi with similar double circle braces on the back, but differing seat aprons, illustrated by Jacobsen and Grindley in Classical Chinese Furniture, The Minneapolis Institute of Art, 1999, no. 16.
