Details
A Large Gray Schist Figure of Buddha
Gandhara, 2nd Century
Seated on a throne carved with a lion support and two donor figures, his hands folded in his lap holding flower petals, wearing long flowing robes falling in crisp folds and spilling down over the throne, the head very finely carved with sharply defined features and curly hair gathered in a topknot
27 in. (68.8 cm.) high

Lot Essay

The facial features as well as the drapery fanning out over the throne are very finely executed. In an unusual feature, the donor figure on the right is holding back the drapery, while the type of flat cushion with beaded rim can be found in other examples, cf. W. Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture in the British Museum, 1996, vol. II, plates 24 and 26.
