The engraved inscription in the cuvette reads From the President of the United States to Paul Bjoerk, Master of the Finnish Steamship Protector, in recognition of his humane services undertaking the rescue at sea, on December 23, 1923, of the Master and Crew of the American Steamship Casper.
The American steamer Casper was on its way from Denmark to Helsinki when it went aground in the Korpo archipelago outside Turku, Finland. As the distressed ship started to take in water, members of the crew were forced to jump into the ice cold waters. The Finnish steamer Protector, who was nearby, rescued the crew showing great resolve and responsibility and saved the lives of 21 of the 22 crew members of the ill-fated Casper.
