Lot Essay
A pair of closely related ormolu and cut-glass four-light candelabra signed 'Cole, Exeter' was sold in these Rooms, 22 April 1989, lot 143. This pair was sold along with a pair of giltwood torcheres also signed by Cole and dated 1826. They were probably originally commissioned by Robert Cotton St. John, 18th Lord Clinton, Lord of the Bedchamber to George III. The maker is probably Charles Cole who is recorded at 270 High Street, Exeter from 1816-40 (The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, pp. 186-87).
Other related candelabra are illustrated in H.P. Bacot, Nineteenth Century Lighting Candle-powered Devices: 1783-1883, 1987, figs. 186-87, pp. 130-32.
