A QUEEN ANNE WALNUT OPEN ARMCHAIR

With a cartouche-shaped padded back within a plain surround with scrolled cresting and with oval seat, each with drop-in panel of contemporary Georgian gros point floral needlework on a yellow ground with outscrolling arms on cabriole legs ending in pointed pad feet joined by a lotus-leg capped shaped X-form stretcher

Purchased from Hotspur Ltd., London in 1966 (1,290).

Lot Essay

The unusual and distinctive design of the stretcher is inspired by contemporary 'Indian' or Japanese and Chinese lacquer cabinets-on-stands, whose stands often display a lotus-leg central ornament.
