Each with a shield-shape back centered by a stylized plume and drapery, the bowed padded seat upholstered in green velvet on square tapering legs headed by paterae and with spade feet, each with a printed dealer's label Phillips of Hitchin (Antiques) LTD., three arms restored (2)

Lot Essay

The design of these chairbacks and legs relate to drawings executed by Gillow in the late 1780's. A drawing dated 1788, reproduced here, features a similar plumed and ribbon-swagged back. The legs headed by paterae appear in a number of other chair designs by this firm (see L. Boynton, ed., Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Hertfordshire, 1995).
