This sideboard is based on a design by Thomas Shearer published in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 2nd edn., 1793, pl. 5, fig. 1 (reproduced in E. White, ed. Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, 1990, p.284). A similar sideboard at Temple Newsam House, Leeds is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, vol. II, 1978, pp. 280-281, fig. 338.

A virtually identical sideboard belonging to Mrs. Samuel A. Peck, Westbury, Long Island, was sold Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc.,New York, 20-21 January 1961, lot 362.
