A REGENCY MAHOGANY READING ARMCHAIR

In the manner of Morgan and Saunders, the C-shaped crestrail and arm-supports terminating in scrolls, surmounted by an adjustable reading shelf, above a slotted convex back, the removable padded bowed seat covered with close-nailed red leather above a caned seat, on tapering reeded legs with brass casters, with two double-hinged brass candlearms, the arms each stamped 10 and 1495

Lot Essay

This chair is based on a pattern for a 'library reading chair' published in Ackermann's Repository in 1810 which states: 'As a proof of the real comfort and convenience, they are now in a great sale at the warerooms of the inventors, Messrs. Morgan and Saunders, Catherine-street, Strand' (reproduced in P. Agius, ed., Ackermann's Regency Furniture and Interiors, Wiltshire, 1984, p.54, pl.19).
