The rectangular crossbanded top and flaps fitted to one side with a hinged raised writing compartment, the compartment with a sliding fall-front decorated with ribbon-tied garlands opening to reveal a central door inlaid with a floral spray sliding back to enclose a smaller drawer and flanked by four drawers and pigeonholes above a frieze fitted with one drawer and three false drawers, the reverse similarly fitted, with overall crossbanding on square panelled legs with block feet with brass caps and casters

Both the design and the mechanism of this table are very closely based on plate 56 of Thomas Sheraton, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793. Another example was sold at Christie's London, 1 December 1977, lot 42; and a further example was offered at Sotheby's New York, 12 December 1987, lot 175.

The harlequin multi-purpose mechanical table, serving for eating, writing and gaming, was named after the 18th century master-of-disguises in the Commedia de Arte theatre.
