Lot Essay

A table with similar satyr goats' hoof feet was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London 7 July 1989, lot 27. Others include one sold Sotheby's London, 11 November 1988, lot 23 and 7 July 1989, lot 27, respectively. Also see lot 281 in this sale. These tables derive from a satyr masked table bearing the arms of Cholmondeley impaling Walpole and sold by Christie's London, 22 November 1962, lot 57.

A closely related table with satyr hooves and prominently displayed Venus shell badge is illustrated in E. Wenham, The Collector's Guide to Furniture Design, New York, 1928, p.236, fig.591. Another table with shell-centered apron was sold from the Estate of Nicholas Phillips, Esq., Luton Hoo, Christie's South Kensington, 6 September 1998, lot 175.
