Lot Essay

The design for these elegant chairbacks, with the Prince-of-Wales plume, combined with simulated drapery swags, closely relates to a design by the celebrated firm of furniture makers, Gillows of Lancaster, dated 1788 (see L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, fig. 273).
