A FRENCH SILVER-GILT ALTAR SET
Maker's mark of Martin et Dejean, Paris, 1838-46
Comprising a chalice, paten, cruet set and bell; the chalice on domed circular base with baluster stem chased with angels and scenes from the life of Christ against a matted ground, interspersed with angel-wing masks and set with blue glass stones, the cup applied with similar decoration, the paten chased with scene of the Last Supper, the shaped oval cruet stand with chased border and engraved foliate base, fitted with two covered ewers with scroll handles, one chased with cattail, the other with grape vines, all set with blue glass stones, the bell of typical form with vacant cartouches and pendant fruit, with fitted velvet-lined leather case, marked on rim of cup and base of chalice, paten, spout and cover of cruets, footrim of cruet stand and base of bell

Lot Essay

This altar set from the sacristy of the Rsidence Majeure Saint-Germain, Paris, was, by tradition, given to Pre de Ravignan by Napolon III and Empress Eugnie for the sermons at the Cathdrale de Paris, 1836-47.
