Lot Essay

The cover of this periodical depicts Duchamp in his famous role of Rrose Slavy and is derived from an original photograph taken by Man Ray which has been adapted for use as the label on a bottle of fictional perfume Belle Haleine: eau de Violette.

Contributors to this short-lived publication include, Man Ray, Tristan Tzara, Marsden Hartley, Rube Goldberg, Alfred Steiglitz and Duchamp himself. This, the only issue, was published in April 1921.
